Impact of sewage coverage on the incidence of diarrheal diseases in Brazil: integrative review

Abstract

Objective: to analyze the relationship between sanitation coverage and the incidence of diarrheal diseases in Brazil. Methods: integrative review carried out in the PubMed, SciELO and LILACS databases, with articles published between 2020 and 2024. The search strategy was used with the descriptors "sanitation", "diarrheal diseases" and "Brazil", combined by the Boolean operator AND. Observational studies and reviews with epidemiological data were included. Results: 10 studies were selected. It was observed that municipalities with lower sewage coverage had higher hospitalization rates for diarrheal diseases, especially in children under five years of age. Expanding access to sanitation was associated with a significant reduction in these indicators. Conclusion: low sanitation coverage directly contributes to the increase in diarrheal diseases, highlighting the need for public policies aimed at universalizing sanitation.
