Analysis of knowledge about cervical cancer: the empirical versus the scientific

Objective: To analyze women’s level of knowledge about cervical cancer. Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive, and qualitative study, approved by the Research Ethics Committee, conducted with 25 women aged between 25 and 64 years who attended a Health Unit in the Southern District of the city of Manaus, Amazonas, in January 2025. Data collection was carried out through interviews using a semi-structured script and analyzed according to Bardin’s Content Analysis technique. Results: The participants’ statements were analyzed, from which the following categories emerged: “Empirical knowledge prevailing over scientific knowledge in women’s health care” and “Adherence to preventive screening and factors associated with knowledge.” Conclusion: Women’s level of knowledge about cervical cancer is insufficient, particularly regarding symptoms, risk factors, and prevention methods, and these findings contribute to Nursing by identifying gaps and supporting the development of educational strategies aimed at health promotion, prevention, early diagnosis, and humanized care.
