Abstract

This study presents reflections that aim to demonstrate the relevance of Social Security systems as crucial means of protecting the human dignity and Social Order, relevance undeniably reaffirmed in front the social contingencies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the respective measures in its fight. The study’s conclusion, based on the consulted doctrine and the brief analysis of some of the measures taken by South American countries during the pandemic, is that, in the face of the risk society paradigm and the succession of social contingencies of magnitude and impact increasingly larger and unpredictable in contemporary society, it is socially and economically necessary to maintain strong Social Security systems, as broad and effective as possible, not only for the benefit of direct recipients, but also for the maintenance of a society with legal security and Social Order.
