The context of climate change can pose serious socio-environmental risks. Social security is a social right intended to protect individuals from various life events such as old age, incapacity for work, maternity, and unemployment, among others. Thus, the problem addressed is the existence of gaps in social security protection in Brazil for people affected by various environmental events like floods, droughts, landslides, and hurricanes. The study seeks to answer the question: is there any social security protection for victims of environmental disasters in Brazil? This is an initial approach to understanding the Brazilian reality, for which an exploratory method was chosen to form the basis for more in-depth future research. The study's general objective is to analyze the social security protection for victims of environmental disasters in Brazil. The specific objectives are to understand climate change and the impact of various environmental catastrophes on society, as well as to understand the function of social security law and its potential to serve as a tool for socio-environmental protection. The results obtained show that there are bills in Brazil seeking to guarantee differentiated social security treatment for disaster victims, but no specific benefit exists for these contingencies. These results indicate a gap in social security protection against the socio-environmental risks arising from climate change. It is concluded that there is a need to evolve the approach to this issue and to seek international practices that can assist in developing solutions for this problem. These findings contribute to creating a foundation for more in-depth future research.
